March 1, 2009 - Orlando Opal-RT Technologies, (www.opal-rt.com), the leading developer of open Real-Time Simulators and hardware-in-the-loop testing systems for electrical, power electronic, and mechanical systems, today announced the launch of RT-XSG, a blockset for use in the development of models in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The announcement is taking place at the 2009 Motor, Drive & Automation Systems Conference, where Opal-RT is exhibiting in Booth #616 in cooperation with The MathWorks, an Opal-RT technology partner. RT-XSG enables engineers to generate custom, application specific models that can be implemented onto an FPGA device. Signal conditioning and conversion modules are also available that enable the custom model to be used for Real-Time Simulation, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) data processing. RT-XSG can be used in standalone mode in order to provide configuration data when operating in the MATLAB/Simulink environment . It can also be used when modeling within the RT-LAB® environment, providing the user with a state-of-the-art solution for advanced FPGA-accelerated Real-Time and HIL system simulation. RT-XSG provides a convenient, Simulink-based way to build models. Using the RT-XSG toolbox saves time when conducting FPGA-based co-simulation, since it automatically manages configuration file generation on each supported platform. It also manages the configuration of the platform, along with the transfer of high-bandwidth data between RT-LAB simulation models and the user-defined custom model, built using RT-XSG, and executed on an FPGA device. With the help of Xilinx’s System Generator for DSP blockset, only minimal programmable logic technical knowledge is needed to use RT-XSG. This blockset is used to translate a Simulink design built using particular library blocks into HDL. This translated design is used by additional Opal-RT tools to provide access to fast I/O interfaces and debugging facilities. “Advancements in FPGA technology have made it possible for design engineers to conduct testing and simulation of increasingly complex electrical and power electronic models,” said Jean Belanger, President and Co-Founder of Opal-RT Technologies. “With the launch of RT-XSG, design engineers now have access to an easy to use tool that will enable them to conduct high speed and high precision test and simulation of models executed on FPGA, either in Real-Time with Hardware-in-the-Loop using RT-LAB, or in offline mode using MATLAB/Simulink.” In addition to Opal-RT’s complete line of OP5000 FPGA boards, RT-XSG supports a growing number of FPGA devices from Xilinx, including the Virtex®-5 FPGA ML50x platforms. Using RT-XSG, supported FPGA devices can be configured exactly as required by the user, not just with the board manufacturer default configuration. Integration with Simulink and the System Generator for DSP toolbox from Xilinx allows the transfer of Simulink submodels to an FPGA processor for distributed processing. In addition, standard and user-developed functions can be stored on on-board Flash memory for instant start-up. RT-LAB-compatible platforms can be remotely configured using a network-based utility. Additionally, all RT-XSG supported standalone products are configurable on-the-fly using a JTAG connection and the device vendor programming software. RT-XSG enables update rates of 100 MHz on supported platforms, providing the capability to perform time stamped capture and generation of digital events for high precision switching of items, such as PWM I/O signaling up to very high frequencies. This is possible because I/O scheduling is performed directly on a reconfigurable board. With Opal-RT’s OP5300 family of conversion and conditioning modules the user can have real-time access to interface I/O signals. About Opal-RT Technologies Inc.
